Domains, explained

Understand who manages a domain.

Start with an official lookup, then interpret the result before you change anything.

Choose the right lookup service

A domain lookup can show the registrar, registration status and selected technical details for a name. Public results do not necessarily show the registrant’s personal contact information. The available fields depend on the registry and its publication policy.

Look up a .uk name

Use Nominet’s official lookup for the .uk namespace, including .co.uk, .org.uk and .me.uk. Type the domain without a web address path, then read the registration status, registrar and dates in context. A lookup is useful when you are planning a transfer or investigating which organisation manages a domain.

Look up an international domain

For generic top-level domains such as .com and .org, ICANN’s registration data lookup provides an official starting point. Public registration data may use RDAP rather than a traditional WHOIS response. A privacy or redaction entry does not, by itself, mean that a domain is untrustworthy.

What to check in the result

  • Registrar: the organisation responsible for the registration account.
  • Status: restrictions or lifecycle states that may affect changes or transfers.
  • Dates: creation, expiry and update fields, interpreted using the registry’s rules.
  • Nameservers: the delegation used for DNS. These do not prove which company hosts every part of the website or email.

Before making a change

Confirm that you have access to the domain account, keep a copy of the current DNS records and separate a registrar transfer from a hosting or email migration. For a name you manage with telaHosting, use your client account or open a support ticket if a result is unclear.
